Consequences
There is no known cure for hearing damage, which usually occurs unnoticed and develops gradually over a period of years.

The most common hearing problems are:
  • Hearing loss
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Hyperacusis (hypersensitivity of the ears)

And less common are:
  • Distortion
  • Diplacusis (the perception of one tone as two separate tones of different pitch)
  • Meniere (including nausea and dizziness)

Sudden hearing problems:
Nearly all hearing problems can also occur suddenly, in such cases head trauma, a tumor, extreme exposure to loud noise or a severe, acute infection are possible causes.

Symptoms:
  • With hearing loss: loss of speech recognition and communication problems
  • More “neurological” hearing problems: continuous ringing in the ears or hypersensitivity, distorted sounds or false sounds, dizziness
  • Lack of energy and concentration

Secondary problems: isolation, problems sleeping, behavioural changes and depression

Grieving process: Unemployment and a loss of social contact are potential consequences of hearing problems and can lead to an intense process of grieving.
